Day # 10 Wednesday 5/30

Continuation of rough layout of book.


  • Use large paper to lay each page out by pasting picture and events from timeline that will be illustrated on that page.
  • Play around with the page by writing down ideas and intentions. 
  • Remember panel sizes can vary and much can be said through the visual mode if carefully planned.
  • Keep in mind what part of the story is being told on that page (consider even writing on the page)


TO CONSIDER/INCLUDE:
  • Need more pics? Note where you do
  • What will you draw?
  • Need more history?
  • Are gaps in time explained? (consider narration boxes)
  • Does your story make sense?
  • Chapter titles original and suggestive of the content within the chapter?
  • Have you used the ideas we uncovered while looking at GNs?

Day #8 - Clarklisto


1. Summarize chapters of book (teacher approval)

2. Begin playing with layout of story

3. Cut up timeline, cut out pics

4. Play around with each chapter on the large sheet of paper provided.

5. Determine where there are holes in your story and fill in missing work.

6. Write down additional ideas by writing on pages (This is a ROUGH WORK SPACE)

Add to timeline to ensure there are 20-40 entries
Print timeline
Work with your partner to markup your printed timeline so individual chapters are clear.
Name each chapter (3-7 distinct chapters expected)


Meet with Mr. Clark or Ms. C to review your chapters and ideas.

HW: For each chapter list at least 3 pics you should try to find.

Today you will continue your research.
First let's set up the GN workspace with one more slide so you can begin to amass ideas for images.

The rest of the time will be spent expanding your timeline and "must have" ideas by completing the following:

1. Watch video about your topic that is attached to Mr. Clark's hyperdoc

2. Watch the section regarding your topic on the  Eyes on the Prize disk that we will have available for you (this will have to be coordinated so be ready to go watch your portion when you are called)

  1. You and your partner will read the linked document out loud together, stopping to discuss as necessary. Annotate and underline as you go.
  2. Get a computer from my room

  4. Based on this first read create a bulleted list of “MUST HAVES”

Task: Students will investigate a story from the Civil Rights Movement and create a graphic short story.  In the end, students will read their stories to 5th graders.



Watch movie Selma while reading Lewis’ novel March, Book 3.
Scenes 1-5 → :00-32:36 (Main events: MLK wins Nobel Peace Prize, Birmingham Church
Bombing, registering to vote, MLK and LBJ meet, MLK visits Selma, LBJ meets with Hoover,
MLK returns to Atlanta, breakfast with the SCLC, MLK speech to Selma residents, MLK meets
with Lewis and SNCC and decides on Selma)
Read in March → Pages 5-11, 145-163.
